IT LIES OFF RHODE ISLAND

Captain James Cook was an intrepid explorer of the eighteenth century. His name is associated with the "discovery" of Australia, New Zealand, the Pitt Cairns, Antartica and of course, Hawai'i. In the Hamilton Library of the University of Hawaii, Manoa, is preserved the journals and documents of the voyages of Captain Cook. He was killed on the island of Kaui in a bizzare episode made all the more strange by the intervention of two anthropologists, Marshall Sahlins and Obessyekke. Mistaken to be god LONO, Captain Cook sailed away only to be driven back to the islan of Kaui where he was set upon and killed. A stone marks the place where Captain Cook fell. It is now part of Hawaiian folklore.

Yet for the past 200 years the fate of his flagship HMS Endeavor has remained a deep mystery. Marine Archaeologists have located the wreks of nearly 13 ships off the coast of Rhode Island. These ships were scuttled by the English in 1778 during the American Rebellion in order to prevent the American and French from advancing to New Port. One of the wreks discovered bears the name Lord Sandwich who was the patron of James Cook. There is historical evidence to show that Cook renamed Endeavour as Sandwich in honor of his patron. In fact the original name given to Hawaii was Sandwich Island. It couild well be the long lost Endeavour.

This Lord Sandwich liked to play cards and gamble away his fortune. So fond was he of playing cards that he asked his cooks to stuff meant between slices of bread. And thus we have our Samswiches of today.

Anyway the Discovery of Endeavor is an interesting one.
