Iran"s Nuclear Ambitions
Published on October 30, 2004 By Bahu Virupaksha In Politics
The nuclear ambitions of the Islamic regime in Theran is causing a great deal of disquiet amongst the Europeans and of course, the USA. Iran has learnt an important lesson from the exprience of Iraq. In 1981 Israel with the tacit support of the Reagan Administration bombed the Osirak Reactor therby indicating to the world that the West will not permit an Islamic country to possess nuclear weapons. Iran is following the policy of distributing its nuclear facilities over a wide area making the areal strike option impossible.Further, with oil prices sky rocektting, any more instability in the Middle East will have an adverse impact on Western economies.
The IAEA is extremely fair in its assessment. We have to remember that Dr Hans Blix, in spite of sustained pressure did not give in and reported to the UN Security Council in a factual manner. Hence the USA will attempt to take yhr matter with the UN directly. Both China and Russia will use their veto in any punitive move against Iran thereby styming American efforts to have sanctions imposed on Iran. This will be a defeat to the Bush doctrine of stopping nuclear proliferation. Any international attempt to[regulate the nulear fuel cycle will be met by recalcitrance. War and bloodshed is not the answer to such issues.

Wrong answer. No air stike is *impossible*! Unlikely or highly improbable, but not impossible.

I meant the political cost of doing such a thing not the technical capability.

British foreign secretary came today stated that it was 'inconceivable' that the US would bomb Iran.

Pointing to talks with Tehran, Mr Straw said: "I don't see any circumstances in which military action would be justified against Iran, full stop." Asked if it was inconceivable that the world would support US military action against Iran, presumably bombings or using Israel as a "proxy", Mr Straw replied: "Not only is that inconceivable but I think the prospect of it happening is inconceivable."

I wonder how the UK would react if the USA did carry out strikes?

That is my point. Jack Straw may be making statements to put the Iranians off guard. Now that Bush has legitimately won his second tern it is just not conceivable the his "axis of evil" will be free from American attention. I predict a great deal of turmoil in the Middle Esat over this and other issues. I just headr that 3 Black Watch soldiers have been killed in the region around Bagdad. This shows that Tony Blair is taking too great a risk is escalating the conflict.
