The sad demise of Jhonny Carson has left many of us struck at the thought that a fixture in ones life has now ended. Many decades back when I was in graduate school I looked forward to his TO Night Show as I walked home across the Campus. The thought of the familiar face waiting at the end of a hard and busy day was not only encouraging but also cheering after a Hard days work and study. Carson's humour was one of a kind. Never mean spirited and not always genteel. Yet he brought a touch of lightness to ones existence. Those were the days before the internet, before cable networki in fact the PCs were just coming into the market. We could see the To Night Show in the "satellite delay" mode which meant that the Mainland had already seen the Show by the time it was beamed to the Islands.
Jhonny Carson will be remembered for his understated humour, sharp punch lines and graceful speech. He has not been seen in Public for several years since 1992 when he retired, but he will live in the hearts and minds of those whose lives he touched if only through the T V. Good Night and may your soul rest in everlastimg peace.
