This blog explores the contemporary political and cultural trends from a distinct perspective
Even before the dust had settled on the Atlanta killing another horrific event took place. In a church a seeingly educated, educated suburban dwelling parishner pulled out an automatic weapon and killed 7 people before shooting himself. This event like the Atlanta Killings suggests that it is time to consider seriously a law against owning guns. The argument trotted out by the spokesmen of the NRA that the right to bear arms is a constitutional right is misplaced, because the Bill of Rights permits the citizens to bear atrms in a National Militia. Private men and women owning weapons is not envisaged by the constitution. Unfortunately, the USA has become the only advanced technological society having the highest per capita weapons to population. The security of the citizens can only be safe guatrded by the state and effective policing is the sine qua non for citizens secutity It is pertinent to point out that a few weeks earlier the husband and mother of a Chicago judge were shot dead in their homes by a former prisoner. ,

it's the height of ignorance to see someone murder people and then blame the tool he used to do it. I wonder if cavemen ever tried to outlaw clubs...

If someone is committed enough to storm a church and shoot people, and they couldn't get a gun, they'd just make a pipe bomb.

"Private men and women owning weapons is not envisaged by the constitution. "

People make that statement all the time and yet they never address the fact that no one bothered outlawing guns until the last few decades. If that is what our forefathers "envisioned" they had an odd way of getting their point across. It seems like they would have just come out and said "OH, and by the way, guns are a no-no".

They didn't though, so it is left to us to decide.

"It is pertinent to point out that a few weeks earlier the husband and mother of a Chicago judge were shot dead in their homes by a former prisoner"

Instead of just picking killings willy-nilly to make your point, perhaps you should read this article and tell me if "guns" were this guy's problem. No combination of laws could keep that guy from killing who he wanted to kill. Look at how the system failed to recognize a bona fide risk, and then tell me that the instrument he used was somehow to blame. Nothing about that killing was "enabled" by a firearm.

To me, this is always the last arguement of people who have elevated views of society and are constantly disappointed. Welcome to reality, we are animals, and always will be.

The response to my article was to say the least unexpected. I did not really expect people to use the kind of language that Drmiller has used. I think the purpose of having an exchange of views through the "WEB LOG" is the have a civilized discussion across the continents. I am afraid that it is not possible and will rethink my paricipation in future.

Texas Wahine has said something that I do not understand. Which Husband returned early and why does he want to use guns/
.

I hope there is no fear lurking in this message.

us not forget all the attempted homicides, bugularies, and rapes prevented because of private citizens owning firearms. It is easy to look at Atlanta and go "SEE, GUN CONTROL!!" but open your eyes to how often guns save lives. Add it up.Here's something good to read and I don't feel like copy

I have downloaded your link and will read it Thanks

you honestly think gun control is going to lessen the over-all violence and homicide rate of the United States? Are you just concerned with homicides caused by guns and that's all that counts because it strengthens your belief in gun control?

Crime is endemic to human society and we need no lesson in History to know that. The fact is that hand guns make killing a long distance, abstract and disenganged kind of act and unlike killing with a weapon like Knife, makes killing impersonal and distant. Therefore we must think of hand guns and other firearms as a different kind of crime. Many human being will baulk when it comes to killing with a knife, because of its immediate conssequence which directly draws the perpettrator into the act. However, with firearms a distance -- emotional and persomnal-- can be maintained and this makes people do crime far more easily with firearms than wiyh more primitive weapons.

Although I am against gun control for the simple reason that it is not possible, Bahu is correct in pointing out that gun crimes are in a different category than all other violent crimes. The “I’ve been wronged now you all must pay” crimes that were seeing a lot of lately are very much linked to the psychology of the firearm. Walk into a building and start stabbing people and see how quickly your brought down. With a gun they’re in complete control with absolute power over life and death, everyone hiding under desk crying and screaming, exactly what this person wants to see. They won’t get that power trip from a bomb or any weapon other than a gun. Unfortunately guns are here to stay and banning them would just make the problem worse. You only have to look at how banning drugs has worked to see that.

A fair and honest post on this issue. I wish drmiler and others would see it in this perspective.

I wrote this piece before the Minnesota Gun Spree this morning which killed 12 people. This just goes to show how RIGHT this person is.

Only Law Abiding Citizens obey laws!

Criminals who don't obey laws will not obey more laws meant to stop them, right?

Instead the Law Abiding Citizens will be given the short end of the deal while the Criminals who don't obey laws will still possess the means to break laws.
