THE ELECTIONS HAVE NOT BROUGHT PEACE
Nearly 3 months after the elections in Iraq, the Government is yet to be formed. This fact alone must make supporters of the war in Iraq wonder what is going on there. The Western media, the embedded ones particularly, were eloquent in their parise of the Elections, as though the mere fact of holding the elections will bring peace and stability. In fact the elections have made thibngs much worse fro the Americans and their collaborators. The sectarian divide is increasing day by day. The policy of using the Sh'iia majority as the plack for a pro American government has not happeened. The Sadar supporters are holding out andf have now organized themselves to push forward the insurgency.
The present phase of the insurgency has a two pronged strategy. First, it seeks to undermine the confidence of the Iraqi people in the ability of the regime to provide security. Hence the targetted attacks on the police and army. Second, the policy od creating sectarian divisions favoured by the Americans is not paying dividents. A large section of the Iraqi population remains comitted to an Iraqi identity that is not exclusively sectarian. Therefore, though the Sunnis are taking the initiative in launching the insurgency, they have the tacit support of the Sh'iias as well. In these circumstances it will be futile for the Bush Administration to delay withdrawal from Iraq. In deed with the Ukranian contingent withdrawn from Iraq, the colaition of the willing has shrunk to an "anglo-saxon" force of Americans, English and Australian troops.
