The EU Vote and its implcations
Published on May 27, 2005 By Bahu Virupaksha In Politics
France is one of the founding members of the fore runner of the E U the European Common Market, which later evolved into the gargantuan European Union. Why are the French upset? They do not want to take on board Turkey. France has a huge Moslem population and obviously will not find Turkey's presence in the EU welcome. Second, France has had to surrender its leadership role in Europe to the Atlantic union which is essentrially USA and UK. General de Gaulle had vowed to keep the Brits out of the Common Market and he vetoed UK's membership twice. Noe it if France that ks being pushed to the wall. The mindless expaNSION OF THE eu AND THE ADMISSION OF FORMER sOVIET bLOC COUNTRIES ARE A BIG DRAIN ON THE RESOURCES OF THE eu. It is time to asser the nationalist in every Frenchman. Instead of leading Europe, France is now reduced to being just one more member. Frenc voters are unlikely to heed President Jacques Chirac'c plea for a Yes vote.

You do know that those BIG Drains you’re talking about have the fastest growing economies and GDP in the EU except for the UK and Spain?

Also that Germany and France has the worse unemployment 15% and 10.5% respectively then any other European country. IMO France and Germany's economy is becoming a larger drain on the EU then the others.

Instead of leading Europe, France is now reduced to being just one more member.

What, France having the same vote as every other EU member, what a horrible thought. This would be a good start.

Even better, maybe the Brits will kick them out.

The new members of the EU are hardly democratic countries: they have along history of authoritarinism aND HAVE EMERGED FROM sOVIET SHADOW ABOUT A DECADE BACK. The impressive econic growth is just reflection of how poor their economies have been in the past and the present growth rate is only relative. True Gremany and Frane have high unemployment, burt all social indicators of Frane are better. You may be right about the Brits but for the time being their hand are full.
