The Issue is not so simple

The junior senator from New York is agusty lady. She is known to be an aggressive speaker and a good orator.. Yet she made a remark about the House Republican Leadership running like a "plantation". This remark on Martin Luther King Day has been considered inappropriate and has stirred a lot of dust. She added: You know what I mean.

I think this remark is being twisted out of shape. Leaving aside the appropriateness or otherwise of this remark, the fact is that the REPUBLICANS not Democrats were the part y of Emancipation and so Clinton's remark is just incorrect. Of course, she was not making an academic point but a political one and hence everyone got onto her case.

Mayor Nagin and his remark about a chocolate New Orleans. I may have got it wrong, but is it not true that 3 Congressional Districts have already lost their Afro American majority. If this continues to happen will it not once again disenfranchaise Afro Americans.

From this point of view, Mayor Nagin was making aserious political point and there is nothing wrong in what he said.

So what?

You dont even know what disenfranchise means, Bahoot. It means losing the right to vote. It doesnt matter if your congressman is black, white, or purple, unless you've been convicted of a felony in one of the 6 states that revoke voting rights over such things, no one would be disenfranchised even if New Orleans was rebuilt lily-white.

Nagin is an idiot, and a racist to boot

You "tell em" LW! What you've said is the God's honest truth! But I would change one small detail.....next time try a "clueless idiot".

I do not think that Nagin deserves this . He is not a racist as he is a minority Afro American.

I notice you didn't address the "idiot" portion of this comment! Does that mean you think he's not a racist, but he is an "idiot"? And given his remarks about the rebuilding of NO the other day, he is more of a racist than anyone gave him credit for.

How does that not make him a racist?

Well, he has retracted his remark about N O being a chocolate city.[

How does that not make him a racist?

Racism as a concept trnascends individual identiy. Only when one uses race as an intrument for mobilising people against another group can one use the term. Mayor Nagin may have a strong sense of identification with his ethnic group, but that does not make him a racist. It is too strong a charge for a minor indiscretion.

Ahhhhhh but....did he mean it? I highly doubt it! It was done more for his political standing however small that may be at the present time.

And your concept of what comprises racism needs a little work. Here is the current definition:

racism
One entry found for racism.

Main Entry: rac·ism
Pronunciation: 'rA-"si-z&m also -"shi-
Function: noun
1 : a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race
2 : racial prejudice or discrimination

So the statement stands. Nagin is a racist! What he said is most "definitly" considered racial prejudice!

I agree with Bahu; much ado about very little---his title, however, is misleading.
