A Stalemate is on Hand

The news from Iraq is getting messier by the day. The American public was told that once the elections are held peace and quiet will descend on Iraq. Those opf us who have been follwing that story knew better. Now after 150,000 Iraqi lives destroyed, billions of dollars worth of infrastructure destroyed, nearly 2000 US soldiers killed in action and the golbal image of the USA is tatters it is time to reflect on the whole issue. The neo conmen who led the country to war underestimated the power of the Iraqi Resistance. They were not aware that in1922-24 when the British administered Mesopotamia as part of its maNDATED TERRITORY there was hell in store for them at a time when the Iraqi civil society was far less developed than it is today. There is no way this war can be won. Luttwak is perfectly right when he says that USA must disengage itself from Iraq. Disengagement is not retreat and must not be perceived that way. In the last week alone Bagdad has seen the death of nearly 550 civillians in car bombs and other acts of violence targetted against Iraqi s.

A disturbing trend is that the troops are not being rotated. This means that after a tour of duty a soldier who could look forward to spending time with his wife and children can no longer do so. The morale of troops will be affected and more importantly even the top brass of the US army is admitting that the war is bearing down heavily on troop morale. Gen Raggis was chashiered from the US army for telling the truth.

At this rate the dreaded draft will be introduced and that is the only way the present level of American engagement can be maintained. As for as the Iraqis taking over the security operations just forget it. The Iraqis are nowhere close to reaching the target. AT THE FIRST SIGN OF GUNNFIRE THE iRAQI FLEES AND THE FEW who stand and fight find that they are usually overlooked for rewards which is cornered by the staff officers close to the Americans. Moreover the level of Intellegence of the Iraqi resistance is improving. This spells danger.

Let the soldiers come home. Let the Iraqis sort it out among themselves. Let the US provide war reparations to hasten the peace efforts.

Let there please be peace finally in Iraq.

At the moment, this would be the worst thing we could do. Do you honestly believe that our immediate pull out would cause peace in Iraq? That's very unrealistic. They currently couldn't possibly defend themselves from attack by their neighbors. Nor could they have any hope of preventing all out civil war within their country right now.

Pulling out now would be the cruelest thing we could do to those people. They deserve better.

Germany, 1918-1945...Afghanistan, 1989-2002. These are prime examples of what happens when you cut and run without helping the people rebuild.

And here is some more reality....free elections, a new government that doesn't threaten to kill them for disagreeing (which results in a drastic reduction in the digging of mass graves....whoa! That might hurt the economy...hmmm...), free press, free markets, water and electric service to over half the city of Baghdad, for example, much of it in areas that never had it before....horrible stuff, huh? No wonder you want us to leave, COL, if we stay, the Iraqis might become our strongest allies and Bush just might be proven right. Can't have that.....

All that is not worth ONE AMERICAN LIFE. We were not in danger and should not have killed 1,700 brave Americans and injured another 25,000! If Bush is so coinvibnced this os correct. why are his daughters not over there risking their lives to give the Iraq People all those good things?

Because we have what commonly called a volunteer army. You CAN NOT force someone into service otherwhys it would be known as a draft.

Actually, I agree with you. But, I'm not sure that what we are doing by staying is really solving anything. We need to leave. Of that, we can all agree. How and when we leave is where the rubber meets the road. And, I think the bushies have blown it. They got the US into this mess with absolutely no strategy to win the peace and no strategy to extricate ourselves from the mess they created. They have completely proven that they failed the American people miserably, and it's going to take some kind of international effort to get us out. Ironically, this is the same kind of international efforts the bushies turned away, in order to insure that American corporate interests get the biggest piece of the reconstruction....... er....... oil pie. The bushies wanted them to help us bomb the daylights out of Iraq, thereby calling it a "coalition of the willing" (excuse me while I gag), then dissed them after the initial big bombing effort. I hate the bushies. They deserve to rot in hell for this mess. We need new leadership NOW.

I don't know, Mason. I think that all we're doing now is trying to head off a civil war, and we're not doing such a good job of it. They are killing eachother over there, and they are killing us. Maybe, if we leave, and the civil war breaks out, maybe finally other Muslim nations will step into the breach to clean up their brethrens' messes. So far, they've done nothing that I know of.

I just don't know. I wish I really had an answer. We all do. All I do know is that something has to give. You cannot keep doing the same thing over and over, and hope for a different outcome.

Yep, we can definately agree on this part.

the bushies have blown it

the bushies turned away

The bushies wanted

I hate the bushies

Sorry, but comments like these seriously detract from the content and integrity of your message, at least for me. If the point of writing all of that was to just throw around some cutesy catch-words, that's great. If it was intended to commmunicate a message, that stuff really distracts the reader from it. (Does me, anyway)

Not trying to nit-pic you at all or be in any way insulting, I just really lose interest when reading something and run into this sort of stuff regardless of who wrote it or what it's about. May as well just write "blah blah bushie blah blah bushie blah blah."

I just don't know. I wish I really had an answer. We all do.

Agreed, and I'm very glad I'm not the one who has to make those tough decisions. Regardless of who we are and whether we agree with the President or not, I think we can all agree that he has a very tough job. I sure wouldn't want it.

I think the time has come fro a serious rethink on the Iraq Issue. The fact of the matter is that the USA and Britain went to war illegally on the pretext of WMD and nothing been found. The Americans have created a deepening sectarian divide in Iraq and by backing shias they perhas feel that the battle is won. The empowerin of the Shias has only strengthened the hands of Iran who have a ready made pro Iran govt in Iraq. The reral victor is Iran who has captured Iraq without a single shot being fired.

Sorry if they detract, but I hold the bushies 100% responsible for this mess. They lied us into war. They cannot get us out. They are responsible and should be held accountable for the deaths and destruction of Americans and Iraqis. And, I would bet that if anyone would "follow the money", they'd find a lot of wrongdoing, from collusion, to conspiracy, to money laundering, to outright theft.

Bush sucks
Bush sucks
Bush sucks
Bush sucks

What an ignorant statement. Although I would expect no less. How many soldiers Col have died while serving their country in order to free another country? Did you complain about those also?

refuse to

The issue of Jackson is different. The JUry found him INNOCENT and I have by no means idolize him. In fact, I have sympathy for him because he was procecuted in a vengeful manner for being what he is a successful pop icon. As ForIraq that is a different matter.

He was not prosecuted for being a "pop icon". He was prosecuted because he admittly slept with little boys. Just because you were acquitted doesn't mean you are not a child molester.

"The news from Iraq is getting *more ignorant" by the day"!!

So are the articles on your blog.

I refuse to argue with someone who idolizes Michael Jackson. That alone renders anything else you may have to say about current events null and void.

Hey LW, do you realize that the line you quoted is mine? I do NOT idolize MJ! I think he was guilty as hell! The prosecuter should be beaten for their poor proformance. As far as "my" blog goes, my last 2 posts were in all reality about humor not political. So at this point I'd have to say you don't know what your talking about.
